This hand-painted terracotta Santon depicts a Provenal spinner, skillfully crafted with traditional attire and a wool bundle resting on her shoulder.

Santons, or “little saints,” have deep roots in Provenal culture, originating during the French Revolution when public nativity scenes, or crches, were forbidden. In defiance, families began creating private scenes with miniature figurines, not only of biblical characters but also of local villagers and tradespeople, capturing the spirit of Provenal life. This figure of a spinner celebrates the heritage of rural France, embodying the resilience of a community that kept its traditions alive. With its hand-painted details and rustic charm, this Santon is a beautiful piece of history and a unique addition to any collection.

This piece is also available to purchase as part of a set here.
