This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a subtle karakusa winding vine pattern, while the front side is a bright orange color with gold, red, blue, and green floral mandalas.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of JodoShinshu Buddhismon the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table(Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
